Flute Sonata in A minor hwv 362 Larghetto

by George Frideric Handel

Eileen Gilligan Flute Daniel Le Piano – George Frideric Handel – Sonata in A minor Larghetto

The Handel A Minor HWV 362 to me is one of his most beautiful. Originally written for recorder and cembalo in 1720.
Every movement is expressive and virtuosic in its own way. There is something deeply sad and moving about A minor, it is one of my favourite keys to be in.
I chose the Larghetto because when we spend time learning and mastering the 24 Little Melodic Studies by Marcel Moyse, it often stops there. It is important to apply our skills learnt to repertoire so we can make the most and develop this skill set. Moyse wrote these to teach us interpretation and expression. The Larghetto is related to the skill sets needed and learnt in No 2.
All of the Melodious Studies are in the members section with video guides by me and sound files to help play and teach them. These are so consequential to good foundations in tone and interpretation on the flute. The Larghetto demonstrates what is to be gained by mastering them. Without control of the air stream, key colour, phrasing and musical message in No 2. the Larghetto becomes harder to successfully interpret.
Here are two recorder examples to think about because ornamentation is a personal expression, interpretation and choice:
