Claude Debussy – Pour invoquer Pan, dieu du vent d’été from the Six épigraphes antiques.
Claude Debussy’s Bilitis for flute refers to the Six épigraphes antiques. The Six épigraphes antiques were inspired by Pierre Louÿs’s Chansons de Bilitis, a collection of poems purportedly by a Greek poetess, Bilitis.
I love melodies of all types and use them for numerous different aspects of tone development and interpretation. This piece was used to demonstrate and develop in myself and students’ tone, tone colours, subtle use of vibrato, and storytelling in performance. I have found for myself and teaching also that using melodies in different ways creates versatility and a depth of expression and interpretation I admire and love.
These pieces were originally written as incidental music for a staged performance of Louÿs’s Chansons de Bilitis in 1901, featuring two flutes, two harps, a celesta, and a reciter.
Debussy later reworked the principal themes into the Six épigraphes antiques for piano, four hands.
