Chanson de Matin

by Edward Elgar

Chanson de Matin

The violin was Elgar’s main instrument, he wrote for violin with great elegance and expression. Chanson de Matin (Morning Song) is the companion piece to (Chanson de Nuit) Night Song.

Chanson de Matin proved to be the more popular of the two compositions because of its gorgeous melody and cheerful nature that briefly transitions into the minor reflective and rather restless mood before transitioning back to the bright, expressive and subdued elegance of the G major theme.

The tenuto bowing marks are particularly expressive and challenging for the flute. How do we make them expressive, not too short but clearly articulated? One of the joys of constantly pursuing the wonderful characteristics of the violin.
