Habanera

by Maurice Ravel

Eileen Gilligan Flute Daniel Le Piano – Maurice Ravel – Habanera

Maurice Ravel was born in 1875 and is one of my absolute favourite composers. There is something so magical about the Impressionist period in music. Colour and expression are captivating.
There is so much to know and cover it would not do Ravel justice in this introduction to the Habanera. I recommend reading comprehensive books on him to get a proper understanding of his life and compositions.
Here is a lovely look at him from his home in France.

His ability to blend musical styles is one of the magical elements of his music. The Habanera is an example with the repetitive Cuban based rhythm in the piano and the expressive melody in the flute weaving its sultry way with the piano to create a sensual dance experience for both the player and listener. To interpret this piece, one must start at the original composition point which is the vocalise.
