Flowers

by Miley Cyrus

Eileen Gilligan Flute and Daniel Le Piano – Flowers

This release is the first of my new series with pianist Daniel Le. Flowers by Miley Cyrus was a left field choice by me. It is not something I would normally play but I loved the melody and the message of independence and self-love it projected. I believe in variety and the benefits of melodies. This was not as easy as I thought to pull off. I didn’t want to sound like just another flute player with a nice sound playing a pop song. I had to learn to sing it with the backtrack first which was terrific fun and then I had a voice to flute approach and this is what came out.

Here are the words:

We were good, we were gold
Kinda dream that can’t be sold
We were right ’til we weren’t
Built a home and watched it burn

Mm, I didn’t wanna leave you
I didn’t wanna lie
Started to cry, but then remembered I

I can buy myself flowers
Write my name in the sand
Talk to myself for hours
Say things you don’t understand
I can take myself dancing
And I can hold my own hand
Yeah, I can love me better than you can

Can love me better
I can love me better, baby
Can love me better
I can love me better, baby

Paint my nails cherry red
Match the roses that you left
No remorse, no regret
I forgive every word you said

Ooh, I didn’t wanna leave you, baby
I didn’t wanna fight
Started to cry, but then remembered I

I can buy myself flowers
Write my name in the sand
Talk to myself for hours, yeah
Say things you don’t understand
I can take myself dancing, yeah
I can hold my own hand
Yeah, I can love me better than you can

Can love me better
I can love me better, baby
Can love me better
I can love me better, baby
Can love me better
I can love me better, baby
Can love me better
Oh, I

I didn’t wanna leave you
I didn’t wanna fight
Started to cry, but then remembered I

I can buy myself flowers (oh)
Write my name in the sand (mm)
Talk to myself for hours (yeah)
Say things you don’t understand (you never will)
I can take myself dancing, yeah
I can hold my own hand
Yeah, I can love me better than
Yeah, I can love me better than you can

Can love me better
I can love me better, baby (oh)
Can love me better
I can love me better (than you can), baby
Can love me better
I can love me better, baby
Can love me better

Here is the back track to learn to sing with and then eventually play with. It is not a walk in the park to try to capture some of her qualities but a lot of fun. What I do like is playing this and then playing a Moyse Tone Development or movement of a sonata etc and quickly being able to change hats and styles. I find it challenging and hugely beneficial technique wise and musically. I never stay in my comfort zone for too long. Tone Development Through Interpretation opened the door for me to explore melodies galore, anything and everything , the more the merrier. Play melodies if you want to find your voice.

I didn’t follow the written music always, getting the feeling she produces was difficult as she has a unique style and type of voice. I never end it the same way, this was just how I chose to end it on the day. I encourage Daniel do what he likes musically so he will have improvised the piano part. The music is attached for you to enjoy.

Have a great time with Flowers, I think you will get a surprise when you tackle this .
