The Flautist series uses vocalisation exercises to develop tone, various tonguing techniques, and general musicality. This is one of many that will be available and have guides to them in the vocalisation section of the paid subscription section of The Flautist at the end of the year.
“My Heart Will Go On” as sung by Celine Dion is the theme song from the 1997 movie “Titanic”. It reflects the main character Rose’s feelings about her lover Jack who died in the sinking of the ship and that he is still deeply in her heart.
This is a beautiful melody to practice and develop a melodic line musically, a beautiful tone, legato tonguing, phrasing and few bell tones thrown in as well. It demonstrates loss and heartache, so this is a challenge to get into the tonal colour. It also demands an easy approach to the phrasing, so it retains the sadness felt by Rose.
Singing the melody with the words is helpful to producing an expressive tone and opening up the players vowels sounds which are reflected in the tone.
Playing a song like this, I have found requires a different approach to that of playing operatic Arias and I have found them very useful as exercises.
Lyrics to “My Heart Will Go On”
Every night in my dreams
I see you; I feel you
That is how I know you go on
Far across the distance
And spaces between us
You have come to show you go on
Near, far, wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on
Once more, you open the door
And you’re here in my heart
And my heart will go on and on
Love can touch us one time
And last for a lifetime
And never let go ’til we’re gone
Love was when I loved you
One true time I’d hold to
In my life, we’ll always go on
Near, far, wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on (why does the heart go on?)
Once more, you open the door
And you’re here in my heart
And my heart will go on and on
You’re here, there’s nothing I fear
And I know that my heart will go on
We’ll stay forever this way
You are safe in my heart and
My heart will go on and on
